Cindy Peterson, 37

Occupation: Digital Media Editor of Style Magazine // Video Producer // Journalist // Photographer

What I do: Im an independently contracted digital media specialist working on a variety of projects, including photography, videography, journalism, video editing, graphic design, and even radio. In addition to Style Magazine, Im currently a video producer for Beacon Colleges A World of Difference” on PBS.

How I got started: I earned my B.S. degree in Communications and applied for a photographer position at the Daily Commercial newspaper in Leesburg. When I didnt hear back, I decided to shoot an event and submit the photos anyway. It was from the annual cemetery tour, and after seeing the photos, they called me in for an interview and nicknamed me cemetery girl. They offered me the job.

Why Im passionate about journalism: There is so much misinformation and negativity in the world. I enjoy sharing positive, inspiring stories that can truly make a difference.

My biggest professional accomplishment so far: Our team for “A World of Difference” has won multiple Telly and Anthem awards, but overcoming some of the darkest times in my life and providing for my son has been my greatest personal achievement.

When Im not working: My husband and I love traveling and experiencing new things. Ironically, Im still taking photos, mostly of wildlife.

My first job: I grew up working with my parents and grandparents at their printing company, SPACE Printing. When I was around 8 years old, my dad had to fire me because I wasnt doing my job. I was so upset that I begged for my job back and have been a very efficient worker ever since!

My mentor: Ive always followed in the footsteps of my family. My grandfather was in the newspaper business and loved photography. My parents never had just one job—they did whatever was necessary, even if it meant working two or three jobs each.

The best advice Ive received: Dont listen to the naysayers.

Fun fact: I can easily spend an hour photographing squirrels.

If I had a million dollars to give away: Id help women get out of toxic situations when they have no one to turn to.

Life after 40: I hope to continue growing in my career and raise my son to be a good man.
