40 Under 40: Elizabeth Johnson, 35

Elizabeth Johnson, 35

Occupation: Executive Director, Education Foundation of Lake County

What I do: I oversee the operations of the organization and serve as the primary liaison between the EFLC Board of Directors, Lake County Public Schools, Take Stock in Children (TSIC) and the community. I get to collaborate with an awesome team to host programs, raise funds, and build partnerships that support Lake County students and teachers.

How I got started: I originally thought I wanted to work in marketing when I started college, but having an on-campus job in one of the resource departments quickly opened my eyes to how education can be a catalyst for change. After recognizing how education can lead to a person’s social mobility, coupled with the encouragement I received from mentors, I started my career in education at the University of Georgia. I’ve worked at colleges and universities across the country since 2012.

I’m passionate about The Education Foundation because: I am enthusiastic about empowering others to reach their fullest potential. Similar to the analogy, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime,” I think about the important work of our teachers, our students’ potential and the way the Education Foundation creates partnerships between the community and public education. One of my favorite doctoral classes focused on school, community and family partnerships. Education has the power to transform the quality of life in our community.

My biggest professional accomplishment so far: In 2021, I earned my doctorate in educational leadership with an emphasis in K-12. It is exciting to see my research published and to present the findings at national conferences.

When I’m not contemplating ways to impact community: I really enjoy being outside! The beach is one of my favorite places but spending time outside walking with my husband and our dog is the best part of my day.

My first job: My first “formal” job was working at a boutique toy store, but growing up I spent a number of years working at a neighbor’s horse farm.

My local mentor: Chuck Johnson. I am always appreciative when he’ll share his insight or stories of Lake County.

The best advice I’ve received: Don’t be afraid of what you don’t know. Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.” Grit, resiliency, and having an open mind can go a long way in life.

Fun fact: I’m a sucker for rewatching the Jurassic Park movie series.

If I had a million dollars to give away: I immediately think of the work being done by the Education Foundation of Lake County and Take Stock in Children because the funds could go towards creating experiences for students “beyond the classroom,” scholarships, and innovative programs. Experiences big and small, from mentoring to technical training or even seeing students involved at the Renaissance Faire – these all help our students apply classroom concepts to their everyday lives and help them build confidence in themselves. Also, as someone who enjoys being outside, I would support initiatives that keep our communities beautiful and vibrant so generations to come can enjoy where we live.

Life after 40: I look forward to continuing to serve Lake County and leveraging my skills and talents in a meaningful way. I am excited for the continued impact the Education Foundation and Take Stock in Children will have on Lake County as our communities experience rapid growth. This means thinking differently about educational initiatives, programming, and the capacity we have to create meaningful experiences that will prepare the future workforce of our community.
