City of Wildwood to Split Cost Providing Crossing Guards for The Villages Charter School
It’s quite the hot topic right now. Who should pay for crossing guards for a private school? At their third attempt to answer this question, the City of Wildwood agreed to split the cost with The Villages Charter School.
The commissioners voted 4-1 on Monday, with Mayor Ed Wolf as the only opposing vote, to provide crossing guards for the school in the Middleton neighborhood for the upcoming school year.
At previous meetings, the main concern for the city was asking taxpayers to provide these funds, despite the fact that most Wildwood residents don’t have children, or don’t have children who attend The Villages Charter School.
According to the City of Wildwood, the city’s cost will be around $80,000 to provide seven guards to the charter school, and one each for Wildwood Elementary, Intermediate, and High Schools, with three reserve guards. They will receive $15 an hour and free training.
The Village’s Charter School is expected to provide around $50,000 of the total cost.
