LEESBURG, Fla. — Senior Leesburg High volleyball player Alexis DeLand has made a huge impact early this year as the Yellow Jackets ride to their best start in years with a 3-2 record. As team captain and stat leader, DeLand is not just an athletic standout but also a scholar. With a 4.6 GPA, she’s maintained an impressive balance between academics and athletics, earning Varsity MVP honors both as a freshman and junior.

(DeLand is ranked as the #7 player in all of FHSAA Class 5A Volleyball in the state of Florida. She is also the #2 ranked player in Class 5A District 5.)

Known for her versatility, DeLand excelled as a setter and libero during her junior year. This season, she’s taken on the role of outside hitter, leading the team in both serving aces and kills, a testament to her adaptability and skill on the court.

Her season is off to a flying start with 29 aces, 40 kills, and 35 digs. DeLand’s ability to excel in multiple roles makes her an invaluable asset to the team.

(DeLand has a 4.6 GPA. She show’s that she can get the job done on the court and in the classroom.)

“She shows consistency and embodies true leadership, and I am thankful for the example she sets for our younger athletes on and off the court. Her future is bright!” said head coach Mekenzie Hicks. “The impact that Alexis has on our team’s success this year is huge.”

For DeLand, representing Leesburg High is more than just playing volleyball. “Playing for Leesburg High means a lot to me because I am able to represent my school and make memories I will remember for the rest of my life,” she said.

Off the court, DeLand stays involved in her community as a volunteer and serves as the secretary for TRIAD, a student leadership club. Many Leesburg High student/athletes are involved with student government and other activities which is always great to see. Principal Randolph has done a terrific job at getting student/athletes involved with multiple activities besides sports.

(Leesburg Volleyball has only averaged 3 wins per season the past 10 years. This team could become the best program Leesburg has seen since many of the players have been alive.)

When asked what advice she would give to younger athletes, DeLand offered words of wisdom: “Never take time for granted. It’ll fly by before you know it. Also, never give up even when your goals seem out of reach.” Leesburg Volleyball is in good hands. This team has only won 3 games as an average the past 10 years. Things are already off to a good start.

With DeLand leading the charge, the Yellow Jackets are looking the best they have since 2012 when that squad went 7-10. That was the last time any Leesburg team won over 5 games in a single season. Best of luck to the Lady Jackets in 2024!
