At just 18 years old, Joseph “Joey” Cosenza III, a 2024 graduate of The Villages Charter School, is making history as the youngest commissioner ever elected in Fruitland Park. Cosenza took the oath of office on Thursday evening at Fruitland Park City Hall, succeeding long-time Commissioner John Gunter.

Cosenza, who moved to Fruitland Park in 2020, has always been fascinated by government and politics. “I like the city—it’s a small town, a good place to learn and give back,” he says.

A self-described political junkie, Cosenza saw this as an opportunity to begin his journey in public service.

Though young, Cosenza is determined to bring fresh ideas and energy to the city commission.

“Being young, a lot of people are turned off by the idea of youth because of the lack of experience,” he says. “But I think I bring a bit of everything, including a different perspective.”

Cosenza, who will turn 19 in January, would like to get his commercial pilots liscense and possibly pursuing higher political aspirations someday.

“Who doesn’t want to be president?,” he says. “Maybe one day I’ll pursue other political positions, if the opportunity arises.”

He is joining the commission for a four-year term and recognizes the challenges and opportunities of serving a rapidly growing city.

“I’ve heard we’re growing fast, and I want to help maintain or improve on what makes this city great,” he says.

For Cosenza, this marks the start of a promising political career, and he’s ready to embrace the challenges ahead.

“This is a good place to build experience, and I’m excited to do my part for the city,” he said. “I really love this little town and hope to do great things for it.”
