WQBQ Turns to Community to Help Save Local Radio Station from Damaged Roof

WQBQ 1410 AM has been a familiar voice across Lake County, connecting listeners with local news, community events, area businesses and hometown programming. Now, the community’s help is needed to help ensure that voice remains on the air.

The Leesburg-based radio station is continuing its efforts to raise money for a new roof after years of deterioration left the building in need of major repairs.

Station owner James Floyd said the original project was expected to cost about $15,000, but thanks to the generosity of Bob’s AC and Bob’s Roofing, which is donating the roofing materials, the remaining fundraising goal has been significantly reduced.
“We about $7,000 more to get it done,” James said.

Known for its local programming, WQBQ broadcasts community interviews, local history programs, buy-and-sell shows and coverage of area events while promoting local businesses, schools, nonprofits and community organizations.
Friends of the station launched a fundraising campaign earlier this year to help preserve the longtime community fixture. More recently, WQBQ has introduced a Krispy Kreme “Raise the Roof” fundraiser to help close the remaining funding gap.

Supporters can purchase Original Glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts for $16.50 per dozen, with proceeds benefiting the roof replacement project. Orders must be placed by Wednesday, July 15, at 3 p.m. by calling Patty at 352-315-1420. Doughnuts will be available for pickup on Saturday, July 18, beginning at 7 a.m. in the Lake Square Mall parking lot.

James said asking for help hasn’t come easily, but he has been encouraged by the community’s response.
With donations continuing to come in and local businesses lending their support, he hopes the station will soon have a new roof and continue serving the community for years to come.
