Clermont Welcomes Chickens and Golf Carts

The City of Clermont is embracing a more flexible and community-focused lifestyle with the adoption of two new ordinances allowing backyard chickens and the use of golf carts within designated city areas.
These pilot programs aim to support sustainable living and enhance local mobility while ensuring safety, cleanliness, and neighborhood harmony.
Backyard Chickens Now Permitted with Guidelines
Under Ordinance 2025-008, residents of single-family homes may now keep up to five hens (no roosters) in a clean, secure backyard coop. Key requirements include:
-
Coops must be in the rear yard only, at least 20 feet from neighboring homes and 5 feet from property lines.
-
Chickens must be fed and watered adequately, kept within fenced enclosures, and never roam freely without supervision.
-
No sales of eggs or other chicken products are allowed, and slaughtering is strictly prohibited.
-
Cleanliness is required to avoid odors, pests, or noise issues; violations may result in chickens being removed after three offenses.
This two-year pilot program will run through February 11, 2027. Full details and applications can be accessed on the City of Clermont website.
Golf Carts Now Permitted on Select Municipal Roads
Ordinance 2025-009 allows for the operation of registered golf carts on municipal roads west of US 27, north of SR 50, and portions of 12th Street. Please note:
-
Golf carts are prohibited on the South Lake Trail.
-
A $20 registration fee and City-issued sticker are required.
-
Carts must have safety features, including brakes, rearview mirror, reflectors, and lights if operated after dark.
-
Operators must be 18+ with a valid driver’s license or government-issued ID.
-
Operators are subject to Florida traffic laws, and violations can result in fines or revocation of privileges.
This one-year pilot program will be evaluated in February 2026. A map of the approved roads and the golf cart registration application is available online.
These ordinances do not override existing HOA rules, and residents are responsible for ensuring full compliance. Both programs include terms of use agreements and hold harmless clauses that release the City of liability for personal injuries or property damage.
