Dynamic Leader Transforming Community Theater and Inspiring Leesburg Arts Scene

Dustin Lavine

I started performing: When I was 2 years old. I started as a dancer, because I literally walked into walls as a child and my mother wanted me to learn some grace. I moved to acting at age 16 and continued through college. I have been a performer in some way for most of my life.

My involvement with Melon Patch Players: My mother actually got involved first while I was in Tallahassee doing my master’s work. When I moved to the area, she encouraged me to audition for Cabaret, and I’ve been involved ever since. In 2016, I became the youngest and, at the time, longest-serving president.

My greatest accomplishments: I think helping to grow the Melon Patch Players into not just a community theater, but a community participant, has been one of my recent achievements. I am also proud of helping to push us into a new era with our move to The Tropic in downtown Leesburg.

My 10-year vision: Ideally, I will still be the Executive Director of the Melon Patch Players. This has become my home, and it is more than a job or career—it is my passion. Not many people can say they truly love what they do, so when your hobby becomes what you do for a living, that’s pretty fulfilling.

One of the things I love most about my job: It’s the constant new challenges that keep me going. When I stepped into my role here, I stepped off the stage and behind the curtain, so to speak.

My mantra: Everything will be all right in the end, and if it is not all right, then it is not yet the end.

A fun fact: The fact that I was a competitive tapper surprises.

Lessons I’ve learned: Never accept that you can’t do something. Life is infinitesimal, and we don’t get to enjoy it as long as we may hope. Take that chance, trip, or adventure you’ve been eyeing. Fight to do what you love, against all odds. Most importantly, give all of the love and passion that you can to the world around you because if you are remembered for that, you will be remembered well.
