East Ridge Middle Student Gracie Spencer in the Running for Youth Athlete of the Year

Grace Spencer, an incoming eighth grader at East Ridge Middle School, is among the most exciting young volleyball prospects in Central Florida. She has emerged as a top contender for Youth Athlete of the Year!
Gracie’s résumé is already drawing attention. The standout defensive specialist earned her all-state title by competing with and against some of the best middle school volleyball players in Florida. It’s an achievement she doesn’t take lightly.
“I like playing libero because I enjoy serve-receive. It’s fun and challenging,” Gracie says. “You have to be fearless with that ball coming in like a rocket sometimes.”

(Gracie Spencer is a very exciting young prospect who is already garnered a ton of interest as she prepares for her freshman season at Lake Minneola High.)
For those unfamiliar with volleyball, Gracie explains the role in football terms: “The libero is like an offensive lineman. They don’t always get the glory, and people usually only notice when they go offsides or get a flag. It’s the same with us, we’re the first line of defense. We may not get all the glory of kill shots, but we do the grunt work, and teams need players like that.”
Gracie’s journey in the sport began six years ago. Since then, she’s developed a deep connection to the game, one that goes well beyond winning matches.
“I love the passion of the game and how it bonds people together,” she says. “You can always pull a positive experience or lesson from each game. There is always something new to learn and challenge yourself with.”
That mindset is a large part of what sets her apart and why she’s now in the spotlight as one of the nation’s most promising young athletes.
When asked what advice she has for other young athletes, Gracie didn’t hesitate.
“Character, sportsmanship, positivity, and leadership are just as important as your skills,” she says. “Make sure you practice those on and off the court. Also, practice when no one is watching. Not every practice is fun, but every practice is worth it.”
While her skill as a libero commands respect, it’s her maturity and sense of purpose that truly distinguish her. For Gracie, sports are more than just games, they’re a way to grow and inspire.
“Sports are an inspiring and beautiful thing that are bigger than me,” she says. “To be part of something that brings people together with competition, passion, teamwork and sportsmanship makes me so happy and proud.”
