Did you know that Groveland has a connection with the recently released movie Oppenheimer? Edmond “Darrel” Cashwell, a 1938 Groveland High School graduate, worked on the Manhattan Project — an effort suggested by Albert Einstein and other scientists to develop nuclear weapons and technology before the Nazis — and was a major contributor to a branch of nuclear physics known as the Monte Carlo Method, a way of calculating the movements of nuclear particles. Darrel also wrote many scientific papers during his time at Los Alamos, New Mexico and well into the 1970s. His parents owned one of Groveland’s grocery stores. The building is still located in town near the Groveland Historical Museum. www.grovelandhistory.org
