Local Front Man Andy Matchett Walks on the Wild Side

For more than a decade, Johnny Wild Productions has built a loyal following in Lake County by turning midcentury rock ‘n’ roll into a high-energy live experience.
The show is fronted by Andy Matchett, who adopted the Johnny Wild persona in 2013 after the breakup of his original band. The name evolved alongside the production, finally settling into place in 2018 as the performances grew bigger and more theatrical.
“Johnny and Andy are very similar, except Johnny is usually wearing sunglasses,” Andy says.
At its core, the band draws from music of the 1950s and ’60s, a period Andy believes still shapes American culture.
“So many movies, TV shows, commercials and even memes use music from that era,” he says. “It lives in our hearts and minds from birth.”
That familiarity shows up in the crowd, where multiple generations regularly share the dance floor.
“We have ‘kids’ of all ages out there,” he says. “They’re happy to hear this music played live with fresh energy.”

A defining part of the show comes from the featured female vocalists known as the “Wildettes,” who bring a unique sound and party vibe.
“They’re a huge part of what we do,” Andy says. “Every Wildette who joins us is pushed to shape the solos to fit her voice and personality.”
Andy’s background in theater plays a role in how the band approaches the stage, as it taught him to tighten things up and be aware of the mood.
“Rock ‘n’ roll adds that little chaos, which is necessary if you want people to loosen up.”
That balance carries through every aspect of the show from costuming to pacing.
“Passion is the most important thing,” he says. “A lot of bands leave that out.”
Over the years, Johnny Wild Productions has expanded into themed shows and sister bands that explore later decades. The goal is to grow without losing the spirit of the original concept.
“We want to keep the magic alive,” he says. “And if our followers have anything to say about it, there may be a ’90s band in our future.”
