MDCA Golf Pulls Off Major Upset, Sets School Record in Win Over The Villages

In a stunning upset last week, the MDCA Bulldogs boys golf team knocked off state-ranked The Villages High School 152-155 in a tightly contested match at MDGC, shattering school records and expectations in the process.

The Villages, beat MDCA by 20-strokes last season. MDCA’s 152 marked a new program-best, improving on last week’s record of 160 and besting last year’s top mark by 14 strokes.

Senior Jonah Musslewhite led the Bulldogs with a personal-record 35, while fellow seniors Jackson Graves, Veydan Diaz, and Dylan Lapp all carded key rounds of 39. Jackson, who was shooting in the mid-50s at this point last season, bounced back from a tough outing earlier in the week at Oviedo. Dylan’s birdie on the final hole proved decisive. “This was a powerful team win, the kind you remember for years,” says MDCA head coach Mike Considine. “These seniors have worked tirelessly, and today was proof of what commitment looks like.”

The win came just days after MDCA competed in the Oviedo Invitational last Monday, facing off against mostly 3A schools in an 18-hole format. Dylan again paced the team with a 75, while Jonah broke 80 for the first time, shooting a career-best 79. MDCA hovered around 5th place midway through the round before slipping to 10th in the 16-team field. Veydan added an 84, with Jackson and Ethan Bowman each contributing 91s.

This was a huge win for the MDCA golf team. Looking ahead, MDCA will return to practice today and Wednesday following the Labor Day holiday before hosting Crooms Academy and Burns Sci Tech in a triangular match Thursday at MDGC.
