Omari “Mari” Jackson Remembered Through Annual Wildwood Community Celebration

Nearly five years after the death of Wildwood athlete Omari “Mari” Jackson, his legacy continues impacting lives throughout the community through scholarships, mentorship and an annual celebration held in his honor.

Omari was known as a standout football and baseball player at Wildwood Middle High School who loved working with younger athletes and helping children in the community improve their skills.

In June 2021, Omari died from a fatal brain injury at just 18 years old, only weeks before graduation. As a registered organ donor, he went on to save the lives of 21 people through organ, tissue and marrow donation.

In 2024, Omari’s mother, Beulah Jackson, met the family of one of those recipients after Omari’s liver donation helped save the life of a soccer player named Collier, who also wears jersey No. 24 — the same number Omari wore during his athletic career.

During a June 2023 meeting, the Wildwood City Commission officially proclaimed June 12 as Omari “Mari” Jackson Day in recognition of his impact on the community.

Since his passing, Beulah has partnered with the Wildwood Wildcats Booster Club to continue honoring Omari’s memory through The Heart of Mari Scholarship, which is awarded annually to deserving students.

Recipients over the years have included Vincent Brown Jr., Zechariah Poyser, Ondre Ryan, Ramiyah Blackwell, Nia Haugabrook, Ryan Harrison Jr., Jamarion Gordon, Zaria Weaver, A’Dejah Corbin and Ja’Nylah Corbin.

In 2022, Beulah also launched the first “Omari Day. Omari’s Way” celebration, an annual community event centered around fellowship, youth activities and bringing families together.

“This is an annual event that brings the community together, something Omari would like,” Beulah says.

The fifth annual Mari Day celebration is scheduled for May 25 from noon to 5pm at Royal Park on County Road 235 in Wildwood. The event will include food, games, music, kickball, waterslides and activities for the community.
