Parents React to Sudden Closure of Waterman Early Learning Academy After Financial Struggles

Waterman Early Learning Academy has announced it will close its doors permanently on January 10, 2025, leaving families with just over a week to find alternative childcare. The abrupt decision has left parents and staff scrambling, with many expressing frustration and heartbreak over the limited notice.

In a letter to parents, the preschool’s director, Mr. John, explained that financial challenges made it impossible to continue operations. Despite efforts to secure new facilities and manage mounting costs, including a significant rent increase and regulatory hurdles, the preschool could not overcome the financial shortfall.

According to the letter, when the current management took over, the preschool was already operating at a significant loss, with annual deficits ranging between $200,000 and $300,000. Despite increasing tuition rates and contributing $50,000 of personal funds annually, the financial strain continued. The situation was further exacerbated by a recent market analysis valuing the building’s rent at $14,000 per month, far above the $1,500 currently paid. Additionally, attempts to relocate or expand the preschool were unsuccessful, including efforts to partner with local organizations, purchase new facilities, and negotiate alternative arrangements. Compounding these issues were state-mandated space requirements that limited classroom capacities, reducing the number of students the preschool could accommodate to cover operational costs. With no viable path forward, management determined that closure was the only option, despite the profound impact on families and staff.

While the challenges faced by WELA are evident, parents are devastated by the short timeframe they have been given to find childcare alternatives. The notice period—spanning just 10 business days—has added significant stress to families who rely on the academy.

On Facebook, Marie Mica Gilles said, “I couldn’t believe this. My son finally found a place where he was happy and thriving, and we get less than a 30-day notice.”

Another woman, Steph Smalley, expressed, “Very sad and stressful to have received this news on a 10-day notice. My heart goes out to the parents and employees who have lost child care and employment.”

Families also expressed frustration with the lack of available alternatives, as several area preschools have closed in recent months. Kerry Gallagher Oquendo noted, “Nine business days because they are closed on New Year’s. I’m reeling.”

“This was hands down the best daycare my child went to,” shared Kelsey Sherman. “It’s a shame for families, children, and the daycare staff to be losing such a positive asset.”

Management has urged families to contact other preschools immediately to secure spots on waiting lists, as local facilities are already at capacity. The closure will affect more than 70 families, including many hospital staff members whose children make up about 70% of the preschool’s enrollment.

Waterman Early Learning Academy’s last day will be January 10, 2025, but management has indicated that classrooms may close sooner if staffing shortages arise before that date.
