Lake Shaped History
Lake County was officially created from portions of Orange and Sumter counties by the Florida Legislature in February 1887. The new county named for its remarkable concentration of more than 1,400 lakes quickly grew into a center for citrus, rail travel and small-town commerce. Tavares, Eustis and Mount Dora and other early communities took shape during this period, establishing the character and charm that still define Lake County today.

Hitting Its Stride
Dash Sports was recently named one of the “Best Run Specialty Stores” in the United States at The Running Event. The Clermont-based retailer earned the recognition following a multi-step evaluation that included mystery shoppers assessing service, presentation and product knowledge. The woman-owned business founded by Kimberly Grogan opened a second location in Winter Garden last year. Dash Sports is known locally for free custom shoe fittings and serves runners, walkers and active individuals throughout Central Florida.

Guided by the Light
Mount Dora’s little red-and-white lighthouse isn’t just for looks; it’s fully functional and still does its job every night. The light at Grantham Point flashes red every 3 seconds and is easy to spot from the water after dark. The only inland freshwater lighthouse in Florida is still registered as an inland aid to navigation and remains one of the most recognized landmarks in Mount Dora and a favorite photo setting for visitors and locals.
