Aly Herman, 35

Occupation: Library Director, Town of Lady Lake

What I do: I manage and direct daily operations and activities of the Lady Lake Library, including overseeing staff supervision. Additionally, I develop and implement programs for staff and create and maintain the library’s budget. I attend town and county meetings, but I love nothing more than attending library programs and community events. Interacting with and getting to know patrons is the best part of my job.

How I got started: I used to spend my afternoons at the library across the street from my high school. One day, the library director asked if I was 16 and interested in a job. I told her I would be in two weeks. True to my word, I applied and began working as a student library page in 2006. I fell in love with the job immediately and knew I wanted to pursue a career in the library field.

I’m passionate about library services because: Helping people every day is truly rewarding. While many think our job is just about checking out books, we actually provide a wide range of services to the community and are here to listen to our patrons.

My biggest professional accomplishment so far: Applying for and being awarded a $1M county impact fee grant. The Lady Lake Library expansion project will enlarge the youth library area by almost 70%. It will include an expanded lobby, an additional public elevator, and a landing area for the new second-floor Children’s Library. The expansion will provide much-needed space for additional shelving, reading areas, a larger storytime room, a multipurpose room and more study spaces. This will also help us grow our children’s collection by 25 percent and add more children’s programs.

When I’m not working and helping patrons: I enjoy spending time with my family, going to Disney, volunteering for Pug Rescue of Florida and thrifting.

My first job: I was a student library page.

My local mentor: I have learned a lot from Lady Lake Town Manager Bill Lawrence’s leadership skills and he has taught me how important communication is.

The best advice I’ve received: Never give up on something you really want. It’s difficult to wait, but even more difficult to regret.

Fun fact: Since undergoing weight loss surgery in May 2023, I’ve lost 150 pounds, and I welcomed a baby in July 2024. This journey has not only transformed my life but has also made me a better person and a positive role model for my children.

If I had a million dollars to give away: I would support St. Jude’s in helping children and open a sanctuary for older dogs, giving them the best possible quality of life in their final years.

Life after 40: Continuing work at the library and expanding our services for our growing population, watching my children grow up and growing old with my husband.
