Record Intake Turns to Rapid Rescue Effort for 99 Lake County Animals

The Lake County Animal Shelter got an unexpected farm’s worth of animals this week — 85 dogs and 14 horses from a single high-volume pet owner.
On Aug. 18, the shelter received 85 dogs and 14 horses following an investigation led by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Animal Enforcement Unit. The animals came from a high-volume pet owner who surrendered custody to the shelter, according to Lake County.

The influx pushed the number of animals under the shelter’s care to well over 400.
Two days later, county officials announced that after medical evaluations, the dogs and horses had been placed with rescue organizations, including Poodle and Pooch, Pet Alliance, Sarasota Humane Society, Hunters Village, DreamCatcher Horse Rescue and more.
“We are incredibly grateful for the support from our rescue partners and community,” said Whitney Boylston, Lake County Animal Shelter director. “Without them and our incredible staff, finding placements for these pets so quickly would have been impossible.”
The shelter initially announced Tuesday that it had received 85 dogs and was seeking immediate assistance from rescue organizations, particularly groups capable of accepting 10 or more small dogs.

At the time, Boylston described it as an unprecedented intake for the shelter.
“This is the largest canine intake in the history of our shelter, and our team is making sure each of these dogs receives the medical attention, care, and compassion they need,” Boylston said. “Support from our rescue partners and community is especially important right now. Every placement, adoption, and donation will help us provide the best possible care for these pets.”
The county’s follow-up announcement Thursday revealed that 14 horses were also surrendered as part of the same case, bringing the total to 99 animals.

While those animals have now been placed with rescue partners, the Lake County Animal Shelter is still caring for more than 330 animals.
Throughout August, the shelter is waiving adoption fees as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign.
Anyone interested in fostering, adopting or donating specifically to support the animals from the recent case is encouraged to contact the rescue organizations caring for them.
The Lake County Animal Shelter is located at 12280 County Road 448 in Tavares. Adoptable animals and information about supporting the shelter are available through the county’s animal shelter website.
