Tre Kelly threw three touchdown passes to Keydrick Powell as South Lake High School opened its season with a dominant 27-6 road win over Nature Coast on Friday night.

Kelly connected with Powell for scoring strikes of 20, 15, and 45 yards, providing the offensive spark the Eagles needed. Running back Malik Holman also chipped in with 92 yards on the ground, and kicker Chris McKenna added field goals from 27 and 42 yards.

South Lake’s defense turned in another strong performance, allowing just one score, which came on a breakdown at the end of the first half. Linebacker Tyson Williams led the unit with 11 tackles and an interception, while defensive end Jesse Barker tallied four sacks and consistently pressured the Nature Coast quarterback.

Jayson Vasquez, Jamar Baptiste, and Ramond Carter also caused problems in the backfield, while Joseph Robinson recorded two interceptions. Julian White, Ahvioume Scott, and LJ Akins each turned in strong performances in the secondary.

Despite the win, head coach Brad Lord said the team still has work to do. “We have a lot to clean up before our home opener vs. Tavares,” says coach Lord. “We are not even close to where we should be.”

South Lake (1-0) returns to action on Friday, Aug. 29th, when it hosts Tavares High at 7 p.m. That game is going to be one of the best games of the year in Lake County and a must see. Both teams are coming into that contest 1-0 on the year. We will have a game preview of that one later on this week.
