What’s Going On In and Around Lake County August 2025

CUBAN ROOTS, AMERICAN DREAMS
Local author Carlos Solis shares a deeply personal journey of faith, failure and redemption in his inspiring memoir From Cuban Shores to New Horizons. Rooted in Cuban-American resilience and gratitude for life in the U.S., his story is a powerful reminder that with God’s guidance, determination and hope even the toughest roads can lead to triumph.

ADORING ADVOCATES IN ACTION
The Guardian ad Litem Office in Tavares represents abused, abandoned and neglected children in court and the community. Each child is supported by a team that includes an attorney, a child welfare professional and often a trained volunteer. This team provides legal advocacy, helps children express their needs, and addresses their overall well-being. Every child is assigned a Guardian ad Litem attorney who informs the court and advocates for the child’s best interest. Their goal is to be a trusted voice and help every child find a safe, loving permanent home.

STAY COOL
August is the hottest month of the year in Florida, so staying cool isn’t just smart, it’s essential. Prioritize hydration by drinking water throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and avoid strenuous outdoor activity between 10am and 4pm. Seek out shade or air conditioning whenever possible, and take frequent breaks if you’re outside. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea or muscle cramps and cool off quickly if they occur.

OLD SCHOOL
Put on your college colors to show some school spirit pride for College Colors Day on August 29, 6-8pm. Spanish Springs, The Villages.

MARKING A LEGACY
Community members recently gathered at Eustis’ historic Clifford House for a special dedication hosted by the Ocklawaha Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The event honored city founder Guilford David Clifford along with his daughter Lottie and granddaughter Charlotte, both former DAR members. A commemorative plaque was unveiled, with remarks from City Commissioner Mike Holland and DAR leaders. Guests included Clifford’s great-great grandson, Florida State Regent Cindy Addison and Junior ROTC cadets. Local Regent Gayle Everett highlighted DAR’s mission and recognized members Donna DiGennaro and Stephanie Bender for their three years of work on the project.
